Switching health insurance for 2027

You can switch basic health insurance to 1 January 2027. Your notice must reach your current insurer by 30 November 2026; the FOPH recommends sending it by registered mail by 15 November. Register with the new insurer at the same time: it must accept you for basic insurance, whatever your age and health. Moving from the average to the lowest possible premium saves, depending on the canton, from CHF 87.70 (Obwalden) to CHF 127.20 (Geneva) a month (adults, 2027).

How to switch in 5 steps

  1. Compare premiumsCompare premiums for your commune, age, deductible and insurance model. Basic insurance benefits are the same at every insurer.
  2. Register with the new insurerRegister with the new health insurer for basic insurance from 1 January 2027, usually with an application form or online. You do not need a quote, and the insurer may not ask for a health questionnaire.
  3. Cancel with your current insurerCancel in writing. What counts is the date the insurer receives it, not the postmark: 30 November 2026 at the latest. Send the letter by 15 November by registered mail or A-Post Plus. You can create the letter below.
  4. Wait for the confirmationYour current insurance only ends once the new insurer has confirmed to it that you are insured without interruption. The new insurer also tells you in writing.
  5. Check supplementary insuranceSupplementary insurance is separate from basic insurance and has its own notice periods (policy conditions). You can keep it with your current insurer; the insurer may not force you to cancel it.

When you cannot switch

If you have not paid your debts to your current insurer by 31 December 2026, you cannot leave it. This covers premiums, cost sharing, default interest and debt collection costs for which you received a reminder by 30 November 2026.

Change deductible or model without switching insurer

A lower deductible from 1 January 2027 must reach your insurer in writing by 30 November 2026, a higher one by 31 December 2026. You leave a family doctor, HMO or telemedicine model on 1 January (notice by 30 November 2026); you can join such a model at any time.

Frequently asked questions

When do I have to cancel my health insurance?

Your notice must reach your current insurer by 30 November 2026. What counts is receipt, not the postmark. If 30 November falls on a weekend, the Friday before applies.

Can the new insurer refuse me?

No. Every health insurer must accept new members for basic insurance without reservation or waiting period, whatever their age and health.

Can I also switch at the end of June?

Yes, but only with the standard model (free choice of doctor) and the ordinary deductible (CHF 300 for adults, CHF 0 for children). Your notice must reach the insurer by 31 March (three months’ notice).

What if the new insurer does not respond?

The FOPH recommends sending the new insurer your application for basic insurance, with the deductible you want and the start date, by registered mail or A-Post Plus.

Can I switch with unpaid bills?

No, as long as premiums, cost sharing, default interest or debt collection costs for which you received a reminder are not paid by 31 December 2026.
