About the Swiss Living Index

The Swiss Living Index is a data archive first and a website second: 40 verified official sources (ARE, ASTRA, BFE, BFS, BFS + ARE + partner cantons, BFS + ARE + partner cities, BFS BEVNAT, BFS Haushaltsbudgeterhebung and more), 39 metrics in 8 categories for all 26 cantons, four languages, every figure with its source, date and checksum.

What we do, and do not do

We compare official figures across cantons and communes, simple up front and complete underneath. We do not rate, recommend or forecast: no "best canton", no financial, tax, insurance or legal advice, no political positions. What we cannot substantiate, we do not publish.

Method

Every metric is taken directly from its original source (BFS data cubes, ESTV, FOPH, ElCom, SECO, FFA, ASTRA, MeteoSwiss…), archived raw, verified (schemas, plausibility rules, comparison with the previous year) and only then computed. Derived values (e.g. per 1,000 residents) use official denominators of the same year only and are documented with their formula. A checking system verifies after every build that every visible number rests on a stored data cell. Rankings are descriptive ("lower/higher"), never evaluative.

Sources

40 sources are held in the source registry with URL, cadence, verification date and licence. Non-official data (e.g. tuition published by the schools themselves) are labelled as such and never ranked. Commercial portals, forums and AI outputs are not evidence.

Corrections & changes

Data are never overwritten: every change creates a new immutable archive release with SHA-256 checksums (101 releases since SLI-2026-09-04.1, current SLI-2026-10-03.32). Our own errors are corrected visibly in the corrections register; the previous release stays available. The change feed lists every release.

Who is behind it

The Swiss Living Index is published by Mirabello Consultancy, a Zurich advisory firm for international mobility, and developed together with CBI Software, a Swiss software house for identity, agent and border systems. Mirabello is responsible for editorial and data policy; CBI Software for the data pipeline, the archive and the machine-readable interfaces (API, MCP). Neither influences the figures: they come unchanged from the official sources.

The Swiss Living Index is a non-commercial information offering: it aggregates and compares official statistics. Nothing is sold on it, no advertising is shown, no data is sold, and no contacts or enquiries are passed on to third parties. Rights in the preparation, compilation, code and design are held by Mirabello Consultancy Ltd. (a Swiss stock corporation, Aktiengesellschaft), Zurich; the underlying figures belong to the official offices named and remain subject to their terms, while our compilation is published under CC BY 4.0.
