The five danger levels and the measures

Danger levels (the warning) and measures (what is allowed) are two different things: a high level does not automatically mean a ban. What counts is the canton’s measure and any ban issued by the commune.

1 August: fireworks and bonfires

There is no national ban on fires or fireworks: neither the federal government nor FOEN can issue one itself. Whether fireworks and 1 August bonfires are allowed is decided by the cantons and partly by the communes. Before the holiday, check your canton’s measure on this page and your commune’s announcements. No official list of fireworks bans by commune is published.

Frequently asked questions

Who sets the forest fire danger?

The cantons, together with FOEN, for 143 warning regions. FOEN publishes the levels on waldbrandgefahr.ch.

Does a high danger level automatically mean a fire ban?

No. The danger level is a warning; what is banned is set by the canton through its measures, and communes can be stricter.

May I set off fireworks on 1 August?

The canton and the commune decide. There is no national ban. What counts is your canton’s measure and your commune’s rule.
