Cantons compared

Per 1,000 residents, 2025 (latest year with an official population figure). Caveat: reporting behaviour varies, and city cantons also register offences by commuters and visitors while only residents are in the denominator, Basel-Stadt and Geneva rank high partly for that reason. Sorted by violent offences.

Accused persons by residence status

Police-registered accused persons in 2025 (Switzerland), in the BFS’s four categories. Accused does not mean convicted. For Swiss nationals and the permanent foreign resident population the count can be related to the respective resident population; for the asylum population and “other foreigners” (tourists, cross-border commuters, people without residence) there is no population denominator: those groups are therefore shown as counts and shares only, never as rates. The BFS notes that the groups differ strongly in age, sex and urbanisation; these figures say nothing about propensity.

Frequently asked questions

Which canton has the fewest offences per resident?

Uri with 25.38 offences per 1,000 residents (2025); highest is Basel-Stadt with 145.6. City cantons count offences by commuters and visitors against a resident-only population, part of the gap is a statistical effect.

How many homicides were there in Switzerland in 2025?

55 completed homicides; including attempts the police registered 306 cases (BFS PKS). The homicide clearance rate is 93.5%.

What is the clearance rate?

38.7% of all criminal-code offences in 2025. It depends heavily on the offence: homicides 93.5%, burglaries 19.6%.

What share of accused persons are foreigners?

In 2025, 42.1% of accused persons were Swiss, 32.3% permanent foreign residents, 5.8% asylum population and 19.8% other foreigners (BFS categories). Accused does not mean convicted; only the first two groups have a population denominator.

Is crime rising?

Registered criminal-code offences: 553'421 (2009) → 554'963 (2025). Violent offences (SLI selection): 45'980 → 47'338. Burglaries: 51'758 → 34'755. The curves above show the year-by-year path.

Definition, method, sources

Violent offences (SLI selection) = sum of the following BFS offence lines:

Offences = police-registered offences (execution grade total, attempts included); “completed” = execution grade completed; clearance = cleared / registered offences. Rates per 1,000 relate to the permanent resident population (BFS STATPOP) of the same year. Reference-year figures may be revised by the BFS.
