Frequently asked questions

How much tax is due on a capital withdrawal?

On CHF 500,000 a single person pays a median of CHF 40,558 across all communes in 2026, and CHF 4,577 on CHF 100,000. The amount depends strongly on the canton and commune.

Where is a capital withdrawal taxed least?

For CHF 500,000 (single) in Rongellen, Grisons: CHF 22,701. The most expensive is Fontenais (Jura): CHF 51,753.

Should I spread withdrawals over several years?

The tax is progressive and withdrawals in the same year are added together. Taking the pension fund and pillar 3a in different years can therefore lower the tax; the rules of the pension fund and the canton apply.

Is the amount exactly what I would pay?

No, it compares fixed cases. Religion, marital status and other withdrawals in the same year change the tax. You can calculate your own case with the FTA tax calculator.
